English

Sustainable watershed management in the face of climate change, increasing anthropogenic pressures, and growing demand for water resources requires the adoption of advanced technologies. This study aims to investigate the applications of Digital Twin technology in watershed management and to analyze its potential, applications, challenges, and opportunities for smart water resources management. A systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted, focusing on published studies addressing Digital Twin technology in the fields of water resources management, hydrology, and watershed management. The findings indicate that Digital Twins, through the integration of remote sensing data, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, hydrological models, and artificial intelligence algorithms, can facilitate real-time monitoring, flood forecasting, assessment of water quantity and quality, simulation of management scenarios, and optimization of water resource operations. The review also identified several major barriers to the development and implementation of this technology, including limited availability of high-quality data, high implementation costs, modeling complexity, the lack of standardized and interoperable frameworks, and managerial and organizational constraints. Overall, the findings suggest that Digital Twin technology can serve as an effective tool for advancing smart and sustainable watershed management, provided that the necessary data, technical, and organizational infrastructure is established.
